Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.
In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.
We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.
As Culinary Director at The Wildwood Senior Living, I had never worked in senior living or healthcare before. I was not sure what to expect at first. I only knew I was ready for something more fulfilling than the traditional restaurant industry.
In a restaurant, you may never truly know the people you serve. Senior living is different. Here, the culinary team gets to know residents, their families, and the larger community. That connection makes the work feel personal.
Residents have taught me to hold gratitude for the small things in life. It is easy to get caught up in stress. Their life stories remind me that people are more resilient than they may realize.
One favorite tradition so far is the farm-to-table Candlelight Dinner. It creates a special chance to connect with people in the community. Sharing fresh produce, meaningful memories, and a thoughtful meal with residents makes the experience incredibly special.
Success in senior living culinary takes compassion, empathy, and positivity. Residents may be facing physical or emotional pain. A caring culinary team can bring comfort during those moments.
Empathy helps team members understand what residents may be feeling. Positivity can brighten a difficult day. Together, those qualities help create a dining experience that feels warm, personal, and supportive.
Some of the most meaningful moments came while serving as a memory care chef. During one activity, I had the opportunity to make a resident’s family recipe with her. It was her grandmother’s recipe for sour cream apple pie.
I will never forget the way she taught me how to make it. She moved through the process intuitively, as if it were second nature. That moment showed how much residents still remember, even when recent memories may be fading.
It is incredibly special to know residents may not always recognize my name. They may not always remember who I am. Still, they recognize my energy and kindness. That is a powerful reminder of why this work matters.
Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.
