Connection: Family Engagement

Category: Memory Care

Author: Brittany Kinder, Memory Care Director

Family involvement in Memory Care is incredibly valuable and, at times, understandably complex. As dementia progresses for a loved one, families often face new emotions, uncertainty, and questions about how to stay connected in meaningful ways. At the same time, Memory Care teams can guide families toward involvement that enhances quality of life for both the resident and the family. As Memory Care Director of The Wildwood Senior Living, I have seen how purposeful family involvement can go beyond traditional visits. With support and encouragement, families can remain active participants in their loved one’s journey.

Creating Meaningful Ways to Connect

I successfully engage families in meaningful events with their loved ones through consistent and proactive communication. Event updates go out by email, photos are shared with family members who live out of state or abroad, and details are posted on the Arrow App. Reminders also help families stay informed and create more opportunities for participation.

Leading up to events, I stay in regular contact with families and collaborate with them to plan activities that reflect their loved one’s interests and preferences. This approach helps families feel included, prepared, and connected.

I support families who feel unsure, overwhelmed, or hesitant as they navigate their loved one’s progression of dementia. I encourage them to share their concerns so we can talk through the disease process and build understanding together. Ongoing education is an important part of that support. I promote our monthly dementia education events and recommend our podcast as another helpful resource.

For families seeking more personalized guidance, I offer one-on-one meetings in my role as Memory Care Director. I also provide educational materials and books for families to review. Most importantly, I remind them that their presence matters, even when their loved one may not be able to express it verbally.

Seeing the Impact of Family Involvement

One memorable example involved a resident whose daughter lived nearby while her son and another daughter lived out of state. The family wanted to celebrate her birthday in a meaningful way but felt unsure how to coordinate it. I partnered with them to plan a Western-themed birthday celebration with decorations, appetizers, and activities that reflected the resident’s personal interests. All her children attended, including those who traveled from out of state, along with additional family members.

During the celebration, the resident seemed more engaged, joyful, and interactive. The family shared that they felt more connected and more confident in their ability to support her. This experience reinforced how thoughtful family involvement can significantly enhance a resident’s quality of life.

Anyone interested in becoming involved is warmly encouraged to contact me, the Memory Care Director, at BKinder@wildwoodseniorliving.com. Family members may also call the community to speak with me directly about volunteer opportunities. The Wildwood Senior Living welcomes the opportunity to partner with families in creating meaningful experiences for residents.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to family engagement in Memory Care. With intention, empathy, and clear guidance, it can become one of the most impactful parts of a resident’s experience. When families feel supported, empowered, and invited into meaningful moments, the result is often deeper connection, improved well-being, and a stronger sense of community for everyone involved. Whether someone is a family member looking to stay involved or a care professional seeking new ideas, I hope these insights inspire thoughtful, compassionate engagement in every Memory Care neighborhood.
