First Impressions: Creating a Welcoming Community

Category: Senior Living

Author: Michael Crafton, Plant Operations Director

First impressions begin before someone walks through the front door. From the landscaping and building exterior to the lighting, cleanliness, and overall appearance, every detail tells a story. A well-maintained community helps residents, families, and visitors feel welcomed, comfortable, and confident in their surroundings.

As Plant Operations Director at The Wildwood Senior Living, I believe first impressions reflect the pride we take in our community. Clean, orderly surroundings help create a welcoming environment while showing our commitment to the comfort, safety, and well-being of everyone who visits.

Our residents should feel proud of their home, and families should feel reassured that their loved ones live in a community where the details matter.

Maintaining a Fresh and Welcoming Environment

For me, being truly tour-ready means exceeding the standard of simply being clean. We try to look at every area through the eyes of someone visiting for the first time.

Common areas receive special attention, particularly when it comes to cleanliness and odors. Our goal is simple: no noticeable odors. We want visitors to experience a fresh, comfortable environment from the moment they arrive.

Maintaining that standard takes teamwork and consistent attention throughout the week.

At The Wildwood, Tuesdays are dedicated to paint touch-ups and other appearance concerns. We also revisit these tasks on Fridays when our Housekeeping team has time available toward the end of the week.

Housekeepers play an important role in identifying maintenance needs. Because they visit apartment entrances regularly, they often notice scuffed doors, chipped paint, or other areas that need attention.

They make note of these concerns so we can address them before small appearance issues become more noticeable.

Landscaping also requires a consistent routine. Every Friday, I walk the property with our landscaping provider to review areas that may need additional attention.

We look at flower beds, tree rings, and unusual plant growth. We also discuss trimming shrubs and refreshing flower beds when they begin looking tired.

These regular conversations help us maintain landscaping that looks healthy and inviting throughout the seasons.

Lighting is another important part of our maintenance routine. Every Monday at 9:45 a.m., I walk the building to inspect exit signs and check the lighting throughout the community.

During these inspections, I pay close attention to common areas and look for any fixtures that need attention. If I find a light that is out, I immediately enter a TELS work order and include pictures of the affected area.

This helps us document concerns and arrange the necessary repairs. Together, these routines keep our surroundings clean, bright, and welcoming.

Creating a Colorful Welcome With Entrance Planters

One of our favorite First Impressions successes at The Wildwood has been the beautiful flower arrangements near our entrances.

We decided to make a bigger statement with our planters by using the “Thrillers, Fillers, and Spillers” approach to container gardening.

This planting style combines taller, eye-catching plants with fuller arrangements and trailing greenery or flowers. Together, they create colorful displays that add depth and interest to our entryways.

The results have been a wonderful addition to our community’s curb appeal.

We’ve received so many compliments on the flowers that visitors have even asked whether they could take the arrangements home when we change them out for our fall colors!

That response has been especially rewarding because it shows how a thoughtful landscaping improvement can create a memorable first impression.

It’s also an idea other Plant Operations Directors can easily adapt. Adding fuller, coordinated arrangements to entrance planters can make a noticeable difference without requiring a complete landscaping renovation.

Choosing plants that complement one another and refreshing the displays seasonally helps keep entrances looking vibrant throughout the year.

For me, first impressions are about creating a place people feel good about visiting and residents feel proud to call home.

Whether we’re addressing a small paint chip, inspecting lighting, or adding colorful flowers to an entrance, every detail contributes to that experience.

By working together and taking pride in our surroundings, we help ensure The Wildwood Senior Living remains welcoming every day.
