The Wildwood Senior Living Strives to Empower Their Team Members

Category: Senior Living

Author: Dan Shields, Executive Director

As leaders, we hold the power to inspire, uplift, and bring out the best in our team members. By fostering an environment of empowerment, we can unlock their potential, drive organizational success, and ultimately enhance the lives of the older adults we serve. As the Executive Director of The Wildwood Senior Living, I want to explore what empowerment means to me, its impact on the workload, and the strategies I use to empower my team members, as well as the current threats to the senior living industry and how empowerment can be a catalyst for overcoming these challenges.

Fostering an environment that encourages growth and development of team members is what empowerment means to me. It involves a culture of trust, respect, and open communication where individuals feel valued, heard, and encouraged to take on challenges. Empowerment promotes ownership and accountability when teams make decisions. Empowerment builds confidence, motivation, collaboration, and teamwork.

When empowering others, there is a positive impact on the supervisor’s workload and responsibilities, such as shared decision making and problem solving. This leads team growth by developing the team’s skills, trust, and ownership. I empower my community team members by providing clear expectations, encouraging growth, and promoting teamwork.

One of the greatest threats to the senior living industry is the increasing competition and changing market. As the demand for senior living options continue to rise due to the aging population, the preferences and expectations of seniors and their families are evolving, leading to a need for innovative and personalized services. An empowered team is creative, innovative, and adapts to a changing market. Focusing on excellent service, employee engagement, and retention builds resident satisfaction through consistency and personalization.

Early in my career, I learned to embrace diverse back grounds and teams need various viewpoints to stimulate growth. Being inclusive and embracing other ideas builds creativity. Encouraging and nurturing creativity within teams is essential for personal and professional satisfaction, as well as community growth. When teams have the freedom to think creatively, they become more resilient, adaptable, and capable of finding innovative solutions that drive success at both individual and team levels.

In conclusion, as a leader, empowering your team members is not just a noble goal; it is a strategic imperative. By fostering an environment of trust, autonomy, and continuous growth, you unlock the full potential of your team, reduce your own workload, and enhance the well-being of the aging adults you serve. Empowerment becomes a powerful tool to navigate the challenges faced by the senior living industry, fostering resilience, innovation, and sustainable solutions. So, let’s embrace the transformative power of empowerment and lead our teams toward a brighter future.
